Delivering modern messaging (push messages and texts) into a native app involves reaching people where they are, in real-time, with current and pertinent information. For example, as you pull up to the airport terminal, travelers greatly appreciate getting that text message, to inform you that your departure gate has changed to a new gate. The aspects that make these kinds of messages so valuable are timeliness, accuracy, location awareness, niche audiences and personalization.

Join us to discuss the evolution of a modern messaging strategy for both a large public R1 (UCLA) . We will map out how we have worked to enable our campus units to leverage UCLA Mobile messaging to provide timely, accurate, location and audience specific messages. With a goal of delivering personalized messaging to niche audiences, we will share our vision and plans for a roadmap to get there.

We will go over the different sets of channels that we have built into various apps ( campus level, versus Department level), which campus units are empowered to send to each channel for the campus app. We will share whether we chose to require login or not, and results from surveys regarding what types of messages users on our campus have told us they want to receive. Finally, we will share how we each enable the units sending messages to these channels to avoid overloading and overburdening their shared constituencies. We will also go over the UCLA Mobile Steering committee governance body and from which groups it has representation.

Finally, we will also give you attendees a tour of UCLA's locally developed Modern Messaging platform. Our platform can deliver push messaging into any app that is configured and compiled to listen to our messaging engine. Our messaging platform allows users to manage their messaging strategy. Users can draft a message and save it in a pending state, schedule it, as well as send it manually. The system tracks the messages sent, as well as the statistics on how many users each message reached.
