If you find yourself with some free time during the conference, here are some ways to fill it. All of these suggestions are in close proximity (by foot, bike, or car) to the conference venues.

  • Campus Point - Campus Point is the surfing beach at UCSB. It's a popular spot, especially in the summer when the small surf break makes it a good place for beginning surfers.
  • Labyrinth Trail - You can start your walk at the stairs that go up from Campus Point. Enjoy the views back toward Goleta Beach. At some points on the trail, you can see the ocean on one side and the lagoon on the other. Try to solve the maze, and then continue on to the other side of the lagoon. If you take a left you can walk down the hill and then walk the banks of the lagoon all the way to UCen.
  • Library - Visit the Pacific View Room on the 8th floor of the library. UC Santa Barbara Library is a member of the prestigious Association of Research Libraries (ARL). In January 2016, the UCSB Library completed a major addition and renovation project. The Library's mission is to enable exploration and collaboration for scholars in their intellectual engagement with the world of ideas and the creation of knowledge.
  • The Reef - On Saturdays from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., The Reef, a marine lab with touch tanks, is open. It's at the very end of Lagoon Rd near the beach. You can enter for free and check out the marine life.
  • Coal Oil Point Reserve - This reserve is part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. The reserve protects natural habitats to support research, education, outreach, and stewardship. Click the link for Parking and Directions.
  • The Funk Zone - The Funk Zone offers an eclectic mix of galleries, shops, restaurants, wineries, and breweries. Comprising approximately 10 blocks, adjacent to the ocean, train station, and downtown Santa Barbara. Here is a map of the Funk Zone.
